Rep. Virginia Foxx Meets With Salem Distributing
Last week, ESCA member company Salem Distributing Company, Inc. met with Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC-5) in her district office. Because Congresswoman Foxx chairs the Committee on Education and the Workforce, which has jurisdiction over Department of Labor issues, Salem Distributing CEO Mike Willard and Controller Gale Marett focused their discussion on the Department of Labor's approach to ESOPs. Our goal for this meeting was to encourage Congresswoman Foxx to convey her support for ESOPs and concerns about aggressive enforcement efforts to Secretary Alexander Acosta. We appreciate her willingness to speak with Secretary Acosta on behalf of ESCA member companies and look forward to continuing to work with her on DOL and other issues in the future.

News - Virginia Foxx Visits Salem
May 9, 2016 - On her way back to D.C., Congresswoman Virginia Foxx visited with SALEM Distributing Company, Inc. of Winston-Salem, NC. Salem, joined by fellow employee owned company, Computer Credit, Inc. -also of Winston-Salem, discussed the beneficial impact of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) on employees, communities and government.
There is overwhelming evidence that ESOP companies are more productive, profitable and more sustainable. During economic downturn, ESOP companies were four times more likely to retain jobs and during the Great Recession the Federal government recognized substantial savings when compared to foregone tax payments by laid off employees of conventionally owned companies. For every $1 in tax expenditures to promote employee stock ownership, the Federal government collected $13 in taxes! Also, more than half of ESOP companies have two retirements plans and average account balances for these employees are much higher than data reported for average 401(k) accounts.
Asked to consider support for H.R 2096 -Promotion and Expansion of Private Employee Ownership Act of 2015, Congresswoman Foxx shared her enthusiasm to support employee owned companies and revealed a few statistics from her ESOP research as well. She encouraged everyone to stay involved and contact her for a visit to her office in D.C.!
SALEM was awarded the 2016 Company of the Year by the Carolinas Chapter of the ESOP Association for commitment and pride in promoting our ESOP.
